Last month at the 22^nd Annual NMEDA Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association announced National Mobility Awareness Month, which will be celebrated throughout the U.S. and Canada in May 2012. The goal of the awareness month is to teach seniors, veterans and people with disabilities how to live an active, mobile lifestyle through the use of wheelchair accessible vehicles and adaptive mobility equipment.

As a NMEDA dealer, Ride-Away offers a full range of equipment and handicap accessible vehicles one would need to achieve a mobile lifestyle. These changes affect a number of different establishments in various industries, including: shopping malls, hotels, recreational facilities, amusement parks, correctional institutions and judicial courts. Here is a summary of a few of the ADA changes at amusement parks, golf facilities and hotels:

(Note: If a property has complied with ADA rulings from 1991, they are exempt from the new rules unless they do any renovations. All renovated properties and new properties fall under the new regulations.)

Amusement parks – rides that are newly constructed or designed need to be accessible and must provide an accessible route. Rides for children or those controlled by the rider are exempt.

Golf Facilities – newly constructed or re-designed golf courses must have accessible routes for the golf course and at least one teeing ground must be accessible per hole. Carts also must be able to fit easily into emergency shelters and some of the practice areas must be accessible.

Hotels and Lodging – up to 10% of all guest rooms must provide communication devices and mobility accessibility. The rooms need to be the exact same types of rooms that the hotel provides to other guests. Reservations must be able to be made for accessible rooms in the same way that other reservations are made. Accessibility features must be identified by the owner of the lodging area or hotel so that guests can determine if the options meet their needs. Also, your reservation for an accessible room is guaranteed and not simply a request, which is a great new change to the guidelines!

Lakes Region Community Services (LRCS) supports individuals living with developmental disabilities or acquired brain disorders and their families in the greater Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Designed to enhance quality of life, LRCS offers services such as early intervention, resource coordination, parent education, transition support, family support services, and a HomeAssist eldercare program.

Since 1988, The Way Home has worked to help low-income households obtain and succeed in safe, affordable housing. The organization has assisted more than 15,000 families and individuals with its community advocacy and homeless prevention services such as housing counseling and skills training. Tire Concerns

As cold weather arrives, the roads may become slick. That means it’s time to double check your tires. Make sure your tires are rated for mud and snow (you’ll find an M+S or M&S rating on the sidewall). You might also consider studded snow tires if you live in an area where snow and ice can be extreme. Finally, ensure that your tires are rotated so that the best tread is on the front, as this will provide better handling and grip on the road.

Battery Needs

Cold weather can be hard on batteries, especially for wheelchair accessible van batteries. Because so many systems rely on electricity, it’s best to make sure that you have a battery with better starting power. If you already have one, have a charging system test conducted to make sure there are no problems with it.

Vehicle Lights

Winter is dark; there’s less daylight, the nights are longer and winter storms can really reduce visibility. You need to make sure that all of your wheelchair van’s lights are working and in good condition. Check your headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals and reverse lights.

Ride-Away has always been dedicated to helping within their community. That dedication was recently shown when Ride-Away arranged for a temporary fully equipped rental wheelchair van to disabled Marine Staff Sergeant Scott Nicholas and his family while his new BraunAbility van was being modified. SSgt Nicholas is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

SSgt Nicholas was disabled in a motorcycle accident in 2010, leaving him paralyzed from the shoulders down. His family has stood by him throughout his physical therapy and rehabilitation, and now, they received the gift of mobility just in time for Christmas. Currently, SSgt. Nicholas is going through physical therapy in Tampa, Florida, at the Tampa Veterans Administration Hospital.

It took BraunAbility, one of the nation’s leading wheelchair van modification companies, six months to manufacture the van, during which time Ride-Away provided SSgt. Nicholas and his family with a temporary wheelchair accessible van. Modifications to the wheelchair van included a lowered floor, wheelchair-locking system and a unique seating position to ensure that SSgt. Nicholas can ride in the passenger side position within his wheelchair.

This amazing gift was made possible through the combination of a grant of $12,700 from the Semper Fi Fund, and through the dedication and sense of responsibility demonstrated by Ride-Away and BraunAbility. Help Our Military Heroes (HOMH) provided logistical support for the endeavor.

The award ceremony was a touching event attended by SSgt. Nicholas, his wife Yolanda, Ride-Away Handicap Equipment President Mark Lore and General Manager of Ride-Away Tampa, Jim Scruggs.
